Will I get better just singing songs?(Singing Lessons For Beginners)

Will I get better just singing songs?(Singing Lessons For Beginners)

I get it. Whenever we come across vocal exercises. Let’s put it this way

They’re not always the most fun. They can feel repetitive & dry.

And so naturally you think, what’s the point?

If I’m going to spend 15 minutes practising, why don’t I just jump into a song and get better there. It’d be way more fun anyway.

Now today! Let’s break down this question and why scales are more than just a WARMING UP tool.

Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. If you want to improve your voice faster, check out the links down below for ways to work with me

If you want to inspire our next episode! Drop in the comments below what you want me to talk about next.

Let’s start here.

Try it first.

Without hearing you. Without working with you.

I don’t know what will work for you specifically

But if you’re seeing results, keep going.

But for many of you, you might see some initial results but then you’ll notice that keep running into this same wall. Maybe it’s a certain note? Maybe you always keep straining.

Here’s my answer for those of you who HAVE tried this….

In general, don’t just sing songs AND don’t just sing scales.

There’s a reason for why scales are important

And it’s not just a

I’ll run through this Youtube warm up 15 minutes, then jump into a song.

Whilst it might get you feeling warmed up.

Is it actually helping you get better?

So have you thought about this. Why do we actually do scales?

And no, it’s just about warming up the voice.

One way I like to explain it is

Exercise/scales are basically simplified melodies.

Now why is this important?

Because we don’t have to juggle multiple things like keeping timing, remembering the words.

It allows us to go deeper with our technique.

It allows you to feel better EXECUTION of correct technique.

It allows us to go the places where you normally would brush over with singing.

For example: say you’re really struggling with a particular note in a song.

Can you sing that easily in a scale? Where things are already more simple?

If you can’t, this is a sign that there’s some more fundamental that we need to work on.

But there’s also a TRAP here.

For sure, scales can help you go deep with technique.

But it shouldn’t be all that we do.

We still need to study how to apply this to songs.

We still need to study how do I sound good.

Because technique will help a long way. But just hitting notes easily doesn’t always mean you’ll sound good with songs.

So what am I suggesting?

Start off each day with exercises/scales.

But approach it with this mindset.

It’s not just a simple tool to warm up.

Rather it’s a chance to better understand and feel the execution of good technique.

From there you jump into your songs and see if you can apply those learnings especially for some of those harder notes.

Anyway! That’s all. If you found this episode useful, please share or give it 5 star wherever you’re listening from. This really helps spread the word and means the world to me. If you’d like to study with me, links are down in description. Take care!
