Why do I fall flat when I sing louder?

Why do I fall flat when I sing louder?

Why does your voice fall flat when you sing louder?

Maybe when you sing a bit softer you’re able to get to the note.

But when you add some volume or when you try to belt that note. You just fall flat

Let’s talk about this today, and I’ll share with you a simple exercise to work on it.

Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. So I think there’s two reason for this.

Reason #1 - We need more independence

What does this mean?

There are 2 sets of muscles that control a lot of the singing.

Beyond keeping a stable airflow.

There are muscles that bring the vocal folds together against this airflow. As they press against each other deeper. This creates more resistance and a stronger voice.

However, then there are the muscles that stretch and thin the voice to change pitch.

So if we translate this to what’s happening at singing level.

When you’re trying to sing louder, aka trying to connect the folds deeper. We fall flat, because we lose “stretch”

This is the fundamental problem we’re trying to solve with most technique issues. For some of us who are so focused on “breathing”. We might not even be aware that this is a thing.

Reason #2 - We need more accuracy with closure

I talked about this last week. We often overestimate how much we need to engage the closure to add more volume.

We think to make a stronger sound, it’s this big athletic event. And it can be, especially if we’re talking about classical singers who need to project over a concert hall.

But for most of us, we’re singing into the mic.

We don’t really have to get a lot louder than a confident speaking volume.

And so, the adjustments we need to make to have the strength we want are a lot less.

So let’s combine these two ideas into an exercise

Exercise:

  1. Let’s establish the feeling of pitch change. I want you to think something soft, something maybe like falsetto.

    1. What this does it should give a clue of pitch.

    2. For me, it’s the sound staying in a certain place in the head

    3. Might take some awareness

  2. From here - let’s see if we can add connection/strength. Some of you might just think chest voice.

    1. But 2 rules

      1. The jump is smaller than you think

      2. Do not lose the position from the first step OR fall of pitch

  3. And it’ll take some refinement, but keep trying. This is working at building more independence and accuracy in your technique.

Anyway! That’s all. Let me know if there’s anything I missed. If you found this episode useful, please share or give it 5 star wherever you’re listening from. This really helps spread the word and means the world to me. If you’d like to study with me, links are down in description. Take care!
