Why does my voice get tired easily + Solution | Singing Classes For Beginners

Why does your voice get tired easily?

Maybe it’s after a song or after practising for 30 minutes.

You feel like your voice is gone and you need to rest up.

Today, let’s talk about when fatigue is normal, when it isn’t. I’ll also share with you why resting might not be the answer and what you need to be focusing on instead.

Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. So let’s start here! When isn’t fatigue normal?

If you’re getting to the point of hoarseness, or even pain.

Stop practising.

This is not normal and most likely a sign that things really aren’t working correctly.

If you can go and see a teacher!

But then what about when these signs aren’t as obvious.

Say, you don’t get quite to that place of pain, or hoarseness.

But things just feel a bit harder. Maybe hitting those notes is a bit harder.

Your voice just feels “tired”

So what do you do in these situations?

Now the typical advice is you just need to rest.

Let your muscles recover and get back stronger. You’ve hit the vocal gym already.

And this makes sense

Most singers as they exploring their voice will experience vocal fatigue.

So this kind of fatigue is “normal” too and when in doubt you should rest.

But I’m also going to make the argument here.

RESTING MAY BE A BAND-AID SOLUTION.

Think of it like this

HOW LONG YOU’RE ABLE TO SING FOR IS A MIX OF STRENGTH + COORDINATION

  1. Strength - Are the muscles strong enough?

  2. Coordination - Are you using the muscles correctly and accurately?

So yes, how strong the singing muscles are is important

But for most singers who are starting off, the bottleneck for how long you can sing.

Isn’t your strength.

But a lack of form.

How do I know this?

I’ve had so many instances where I’d be teaching a student or even in lessons of my own.

And they would come in, and they’d mention it’d been a rough week.

Their voice was feeling a bit heavier than usual.

Maybe they’ve done a lot of talking.

And initially when we’re vocalising, we’d notice that singing IS HARDER.

They’re not doing the scales as good. They’re not hitting the notes as well.

But what I’ve found in many of these situations.

Once I tweak their form, their technique. Give them something new to notice/observe.

All of a sudden, they get this second wind. And they sing even better.

Now this wouldn’t be possible if those muscles were “truly” fatigued.

Somethings this perception of “fatigue” isn’t because the muscles have been overused but because our technique has drifted off.

So what am I suggesting here?

I’m not telling you rest isn’t important.

And you can go on days.

But if every-time you feel fatigue after a few songs or practising a bit.

And you go to rest hoping it be better

Only to come back approaching things in the same way. You’ll going to end up in the exact same place.

Something needs to change.

If you’re coming into each practice trying to give your voice a good workout.

Shifting the focus to coordinating better each session.

Really study the fundamentals, how to stretch those vocal folds to change pitch. And how to keep those cords together to change power.

Now of course, as you’re learning to improve your coordination, it’s not always going to be perfect.

So you will pick up more fatigue. But you’ll notice as you come back each session you’re able to do more! Instead of hitting that same place.
