Vocal Exercise for Better Articulation & Easier Singing | Singing Classes For Beginners
Have you been told you need to keep your tongue a certain shape. Or maybe you’ve been told that you need to sing with a certain mouth shape
Well today I want to share with you why I think this ADVICE has got nothing to do with the high notes. I’m also going to share with you why it’s really important to separate these 2 different mechanics
The feeling of easy pitch change. And the feeling of free articulation.
And an exercise to help you with this
Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. If you want to improve your voice faster, check out the links down below for ways to work with me
If you want to inspire our next episode! Drop in the comments below what you want me to talk about next.
So I made a claim earlier that your ARTICULATION has got very little to do with pitch change.
But let me back this up
Have you thought about how the voice actually adjusts for pitch?
Now if you’ve watched previous episodes.
What’s responsible for adjusting pitch is when your vocal folds get stretched and they thin out. Most this happens internally within the adam’s apple.
Now of course the voice is a complex system, so the articulation or the vowels can definitely make things more optimal.
But this should start to show you that moving you jaw or tongue in a certain way is NOT what helps you hit the note.
And if anything, when you learn to separate your ARTICULATION from actual pitch change process. So that you can hit the pitch no matter the mouth shape. This makes things easier.
So here is the exercise I want to share with you.
Step 1:
Now let’s start here by feeling easy articulation
Somewhere down low I want you to speak the word “NO”. It can also be any other word.
[SEE VIDEO FOR DEMONSTRATION]
This should give you a GOOD reference of what it feels like to have free articulation
Step 2:
Now what we’re going to do here
Let’s introduce some pitch changes through a scale
[SEE VIDEO FOR DEMONSTRATION]
Now what we’re looking to do here is compare.
Does your articulation stay just as free as when you speak.
If you notice your articulation start to get stiff or not as free, I want you to try getting them moving. You can EVEN exaggerate it a bit more.
Because what this is going to do, is teach you to separate ARTICULATION from the feeling of pitch change.
Now if you notice no matter what you do, you can’t get that jaw to loosen up. Especially as you go up higher.
Then potentially it means you can strengthen your fundamentals more.
By fundamentals, I mean learn the feeling of stretch. And also the feeling of easy connection.
Anyway! That’s all. If you found this episode useful, please share or give it 5 star wherever you’re listening from. This really helps spread the word and means the world to me. If you’d like to study with me, links are down in description. Take care!
