How to stop copying your favourite singer? | Singing Classes For Beginners

If you notice you are just copying your favourite singer

And what’s worse…

You can’t seem to control this. It just happens automatically.

Today I want to share with you 2 ideas on how you can stop copying your favourite singers and sing with your own voice

Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. If you want to improve your voice faster, check out the links down below for ways to work with me

If you want to inspire our next episode! Drop in the comments below what you want me to talk about next.

Anyway, let’s dive in.

So let’s start here.

Copy & imitating your favourite singers isn’t a bad thing.

It can be a great tool as I’ll show you later.

And the reason why is a big misconception singers have is

That their natural voice, their natural style/sound is already there.

They just need to look within, relax and let it come out.

Which can be true for some people.

But I think for most singers, especially those starting off

It’s actually built through your influences.

Each time you’re listening to your favourite singers,

You’re picking up some of the nuances that they do whether consciously or unconsciously.

This is probably why when you sing a song, you’re copying them! You’ve picked up a lot of their nuances.

But how do we stop copying your favourite artists?

Here are a few ideas.

1) Expand your repertoire

So if copying/imitating is a great to pick up different stylistic choices.

Why not use this as a tool to help us.

For the next month I want you to study a song in which you like the singing.

But there’s one CONDITION: It needs to be a genre that you don’t generally listen to.

For example, maybe you don’t listen to a lot of R&B

Or maybe you don’t listen to a lot of slower songs.

Study this song.

AND YOU MIGHT WONDERING WHY?

Singing something completely different can teach us so many different aspects of us voice.

For example, I’ve had some many students who primarily love rock music. But I’ll intentionally get them to sing some R&B.

And this often helps them develop better sense of timing, dynamics and even runs. Just this simple exposure to different influences can be incredibly helpful when it comes to finding your own style.

2) Diving even deeper.

Now for those of you who want to take it further, you can Zoom in further.

Have you wondered, what exactly makes style/sound?

Personally I think style is simply just an accumulation of CHOICES. It’s like fashion.

Maybe it’s the type of shirts you wear?

Do you like them looser or tighter?

This is the same of singing.

Beyond singing the notes with your unique/general timbre, there are a lot of choices being made that add up to your “style" or “voice”

From

  1. How do you start/end your phrases?

  2. Where do you like to use breathiness?

  3. Which words do you they emphasise

  4. Do you add vibrato?

  5. Do you add runs?

  6. Do like to sing with a brighter/darker timbre?

  7. Changes in the melody

There are so many choices you can make.

But here’s what I want you to do.

When you’re studying a song.

I want you to just pay attention to one of these “choices” & try to change them.

Now it might not sound right?

But this is the process of experimentation that helps you break away from the original style and build your own.

Give yourself the time to explore and try different things.

It can be really fun.

Anyway! That’s all. If you found this episode useful, please share or give it 5 star wherever you’re listening from. This really helps spread the word and means the world to me. If you’d like to study with me, links are down in description. Take care!
