Does singing everyday improve your voice?

Does singing everyday improve your voice?

If you just sang everyday. Maybe a few songs in the car or shower. Maybe even some scales when you have time.

Will this improve your voice?

The answer is maybe. There’s more nuance than that. I’ve seen students who see improvements from doing a couple of scales. But for others including myself, we can spend years singing daily only to realise we still sound the same if not worse.

Today I want to share why this happens, so you don’t fall into the 2nd boat years down the track

Now before we dive in

Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. If you want to improve your voice faster, check out the links down below for ways to work with me

If you want to inspire our next episode! Drop in the comments below what you want me to talk about next.

Now let’s use the analogy of working out to build a better body. I like this one because this was literally me and my friend.

A few years ago, both of us started working out. We were consistent and we showed up.

But something interesting happened after a few years.

My friend became noticeably more muscly, more ripped. Whereas for me, I honestly looked about the same.

Why is it that we were both putting in the work. But there was such a night and day difference?

The KEY here is recognising there are specific things that DRIVE PROGRESS.

In the case of building muscle, the drivers are

  1. You need a slight calories surplus with a decent amount of protein

  2. You train the muscles you want to grow close to failure

  3. And you rest enough to do it again.

You see, no matter how hard I work. Unless I cover these things that drive progress. I won’t see results.

This APPLIES to singing. There are certain things that DRIVE progress as well. If you don’t do it, you won’t see progress

So what are these? There’s really only 2 ways to improve singing. First is technique. The better you get at this. The easier your singing feels.

The second is style. The more you improve your style, the more emotions and feels you’re able to convey.

And so really, you need to ask yourself. When you’re singing along songs - are you actually building your technique/style?

Do you even know what technique/style is?

Because if you don’t, you’re just singing and hoping for the best.

And so yes, if you just sang everyday. You could get better. Kinda similar to some people get fit without thinking about nutrition or how they workout. But you might not. Personally I wouldn’t leave it to chance. There are VERY specific concepts and ideas that can help you develop these.

If you’re looking to improve your technique/style rather than regurgitating it here. If you want more information on this. I recommend checking episode 129, 138 for technique.

Or episode 141 for style.

Anyway! I hope this episode was useful. If it was, please support this channel through all the usual social media stuff. Like, comment/subscribe.

If you’re from the podcast, leaving a 5 star would really help us grow and mean the world to me.

Last but not least, if you’ve always wanted to improve your singing faster and with less confusion. Remember you don’t have to do this on your own.

I’ve got ways to work with me in the description down below. Make sure to check it out. Apart from that, my name is Ivan, I'm your voice teacher, and I'll see you for our weekly tutorials every single Thursday or Friday.

Take care.
