How to sing better (making it easy)

How to sing better (making it easy)

Today I’m going to share with you how to get better at singing by establishing better ease throughout your range.

Make sure you stay right til the end, because I’ll also share with you what you should be looking at and focusing when you’re doing the exercise. Because it’s not what EXERCISE you do. But HOW you do it.

Now let’s start with the idea

Basically to make your singing feel easier.

2 things need to happen

  1. Your cords stretch enough to get to the note

  2. And they stay together to create enough sound

Now this is simple but for some of us including myself. it can feel tricky doing them at the same time. Kinda like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time.

Instead of just doing these 2 things, sometimes we do the complete opposite. We don’t stretch and we just press and push on those vocal folds harder and harder.

Not a good strategy.

And so an exercise that has really helped with myself and my students over Zoom is this

Step 1: Let’s just establish the note that we find tricky in a falsetto (see 1:53 in video for demonstration)

The reason is this simply allows us to engage the stretch without connection first. And it also allow us to feel what it’s like to stretch our cords

For me, I notice the sound lifting into a higher position. It almost rises up past the soft palate.

P.s. Focus on getting to the note as easy as possible. Behind the sound is a very easy and floating falsetto.

Step 2: From this position of STRETCH, we try to add connection (See 2:45 in video for demonstration)

Couple of things to watch out for

  1. You don’t need to add a lot of connection. Just enough to make a clean strong sound.

  2. You MUST maintain the lift from step 1. If you notice the sound getting noticeably harder. Then you’ve lost the stretch

So that’s it

This is an exercise that’s simple and practical and can start to help.

Build awareness and muscle memory of the fundamental muscles involved in singing (what does it feel like to stretch, what does it feel like to LOSE the stretch too, & what does it feel like to press those cords a bit more)
