project your singing safely (for beginners)
Okay let’s talk about how to project your voice when singing.
Maybe you’ve heard
“imagine calling out to a friend across the road”
“or send your voice to the back of the room”
Whilst these singing tips can work for some people.
Because it’s still imagery. Often I find students can find different ways to get here.
Sometimes it’s with good healthy technique. Other times, we’re just shouting
I think there’s a better way.
So today, I want to unpack exactly what allows you to project your voice whilst keeping it healthy from an anatomy/physiological lens. At the end I’ll also share with you a progression of exercises so you can try to project healthily.
Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. If you want to improve your voice faster, check out the links down below for ways to work with me
If you want to inspire our next episode! Drop in the comments below what you want me to talk about next.
Let’s start here.
Instead of projection. Aim for more efficient phonation.
What do I mean this?
Have you wondered, how do we create a sound?
At its most simple level, sound is created when you deliver a steady supply of air from the body against the resistance the vocal folds.
This create a buzz like sound.
Now generally speaking to create a stronger sound or buzz, all you need to do is blow more air and increase the closure.
But what most people don’t realise is how FINESSED this feeling is.
Your vocal folds are REALLY tiny. So really to go from something softer to something more thick and strong.
It’s not this BIG action.
And so really to help you project without that feeling of pushing air or forcing the note through.
A big part of this is learning to build and feel more EFFICIENT and ACCURATE phonation.
So what are some ways to do this?
Step #1: Going from breathy to clean
Let’s paint the feeling of bringing our cords together efficient
I want you to try going from a breathy to clean sound. Like this
[SEE VIDEO DEMONSTRATION]
Great!
Now as you’re doing it, notice that this doesn’t feel like this big jump.
If it doesn’t see how little effort you can make to make this adjustment.
This should start to highlight to you that the adjustment you need to make way more finessed than we think.
Step #2: Building strength on this foundation
Now that we’ve cleaned up a bit of the phonation.
Let’s see if we can make this louder on a BUH
But keeping to the same rule.
It shouldn’t be huge.
If any point in time, you feel like you have to push through a lot more air. I want you to try again.
Remember, once again we’re looking to coordinate. Not muscle through the sound.
Exercise #3: Finding a precise spot.
Now to make this more practical. Start to test yourself.
Can you find specific amount of closures with accuracy especially somewhere in the middle.
You’ll notice at times, you might miss. And it’ll be a bit light.
Let’s see if we can go straight there. Without slowly getting there.
From this spot you can expand into different words/sounds.
Anyway! That’s all. Let me know if there’s anything I missed. If you found this episode useful, please share or give it 5 star wherever you’re listening from. This really helps spread the word and means the world to me. If you’d like to study with me, links are down in description. Take care!
