Why most people don't get better at singing

Why most people don't get better at singing (the forgotten skill)

So you've been working on your voice. Or you're thinking about learning to sing better?

But you've tried the "Youtube tutorials". You've tried the "warm ups".

But... you're not seeing the results that you want

You still can't

  • Sing your favourite songs

  • Hit those notes the way you want to

  • And you've even thought about giving up

If that's you, you're not alone.

I have been there before and guide singers to overcome this in my step by step course The Fundamentals Of Singing.

I still remember doing those exercises and setting myself 3 months to work through it.

Only to find that at the end of the 3 months I still sounded the same.

What if I could share a VERY simple skill to develop which will allow you to break past this barrier?

Before I share the most important skill to learning. You need some context on why this is happening.

Introducing the 4 stages of learning

Now why am I sharing this?

Most people want to get to stage 4 with their singing.

Where singing feels like it flows. It's effortless. And you sound GREAT.

But the reality is most of us get stuck at level 1-2.

You don't know why your voice isn't sounding the way you want it to AND you don't know how to fix it.

The Forgotten Skill?

The first step to solving any problem is awareness.

Why?

Because you cannot fix what you can't observe. Especially when you can't see your voice.

For example, it is very tricky to resolve tension in your singing. If you cannot feel where it is coming from.

One of the easiest and most forgotten way to break past stage 1 and even 2 of learning is

Developing the ability to clearly ARTICULATE what you're feeling when singing

That's it.

Build this skill first and this will allow you to figure out why you don't sound good. And even how to fix it.

You see.

Most people learning to sing do not spend time cultivating this skill.

Rather they will do exercises again and again only to sound the same months later because they didn't have this skill.

How do we build this skill?

Journal my friend.

One of the best tools when practising singing is keeping a log.

Practice writing down everything you notice. Where you feel the resonance? When singing was easier, what felt easier? Was there less pressure in a certain spot?

For tools - use what works for you. This could be a physical journal or digital (I use Trello)

The key principle here is WRITE IT DOWN.

Over time with this practice, you'll become more aware of your voice. Sensations/cues you missed earlier will now become obvious for you. That's the key!

By the way! I've got some exciting newsI've actually launched a new course called The Fundamentals Of Singing

Where I break down step by step how I:

  • Built over an OCTAVE of range

  • Can finally sing songs I never thought was capable

  • And actually sound good in them too!

With a routine you can complete in less than 15 mins. If you're interested check it out here.

Hope this episode was useful!
