The Best Tool to Improve Your Singing Voice

So we all know one of the best ways to improve is to record your voice.

Well well well.

So the tool here is BANDLAB

What is it?

For those of you who aren’t familiar.

It’s a DAW which stands for “digital audio workstation”

Basically it’s a software where you can produce music.

Now for us, we’re going to mainly be using the features for recording and listening back to ourselves.

Why should you use it?

Now I personally really like it for my students because

(1) It’s free

(2) It’s browser based - so you can access from whatever device you have

(3) It’s simple.

Now let’s dive into how I use it to help my students sing better. I’ll share with you 5 key features that has made our lives easier.

(1) Stem splitter

After you’ve created an account.

One of the coolest features, I want you to check out is the stem splitter.

If you google “Bandlab splitter”

You’ll land on this page.

From here we’re going to upload an mp3 of a song we want to learn.

For copyright purposes, I’m going to be using my latest song “Two Sides” but you can use any mp3 ;)

Now once it’s uploaded, let’s select 2 tracks because we’re mainly going to be studying vocals.

If you’re interested in the studying production, you can choose 4 track.

Let’s dive in.

Now let me run you through some of the key features in the studio for first timers.

First thing here is, make sure to bring the volume down.

Most songs are at a mastered volume, so it’s going to be a lot louder than your recording volume. So protect your ears.

(2) Mute/Solo

As you can see, the splitter tool has separate the song into it’s individual parts.

If I mess around with the mute or solo button on the left.

This allows us to hear just the vocals.

Or maybe just the instruments.

Which is handy when it comes to practising.

Which brings me to this. How do I get my students to practice with this tool?

(3) Cycle/Loop

Often when we’re learning a new song. What we’re doing here is learning to study the details. The nuances.

To help with this,

One thing I like to do is using the “cycle/loop” feature.

Check this out.

If I click and drag on the timeline at the top.

And I hit record.

Notice that this just loops around

Which allows use to practice a specific part of a song until we get it right.

And what’s cool is after recording a few takes

You can actually go back and listen to them all individually.

Now what if this song you’re studying is too high or too low?

I got you.

(4) Changing key

Changing key is super easy.

All you have to do is click on the key signature and change it.

Generally the more towards the left. The lower the key.

The more towards the right, the higher.

Another way I’ve found is if you double click into the track. You can actually “pitch shift” especially if you’re already at the lower keys.

Now for some of you who really like to study things in detail. Another neat feature is

(5) Changing speed

This is done through adjusting BPM.

Often I’ll do this with my students, when we’re trying to study the details.

You can even combine this with the solo/mute to really hear things.

Anyway! That’s all. If you found this episode useful, please share or give it 5 star wherever you’re listening from. This really helps spread the word and means the world to me. If you’d like to study with me, links are down in description. Take care!
