You can’t sing if you can’t do this (Singing Lessons For Beginners)

You can’t sing if you can’t do this (Singing Lessons For Beginners)

Very extreme title. I know.

But there is some truth in this. Let me explain.

So I talk a lot about the 2 fundamental movements of the voice. To stretch which changes pitch. And to connect the cords which allow for changes in dynamics.

And it’s important to focus on this because it is probably the trickiest part to control well for most singers and where I spent most of my time with my students.

But the reality is this.

None of this would work without an underlying feeling of airflow.

No airflow. No sound.

And I notice this for myself. Some times I’d be working on my technique and things would just feel harder than usual even if I was trying to get my cords to stretch/connect only to realise I just wasn’t giving it good airflow.

So today I want to share with you a simple way to make sure you’re breathing really good, we get can get a quick win. Then we can get back to building those finer muscular control of the folds.

Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. Anyway, let’s dive into this exercise

Okay! So let’s dive into this exercise or workflow. And there’s really just 3 steps.

STEP 1: Blow some air and just notice this feeling of constant flow

[See video for demonstration]

Now what are some cues to focus on

  1. I’m looking for a constant feeling of air moving. For me it feels like a forward kind of feeling

  2. Don’t worry about blowing too much or too little. Just get it consistent. We can learn to dial it in eventually.

  3. One of the interesting things I notice! Is as I blow air consistently, I notice my belly automatically engage. For some of you, you might feel this as “SUPPORT”. I don’t have to think about it too much as long as I keep the air flowing

STEP 2: Add your voice to it and vocalise

Once you’ve found this feeling of flow. Just simply try to add a hum in a comfortable part of your range to this.

And just keep that underlying flow.

You can even work through some of your exercises through this.

[See video for demonstration]

STEP 3: Bring it to a song

Last but not least! If you were able to get to both step 1 & 2. Same thing with the song. Like this.

And so it can get progressively tricky as you add more moving parts. But work through these 3 steps, and just keep seeing if you can notice that match of good consistent airflow

Anyway! That’s all. If you found this episode useful, please share this episode or give it 5 star wherever you’re listening from. This really helps spread the word. If you’d like to study with me, links are down in description. Take care!
