Building Vocal Technique (By Breaking It…)

Building Your Vocal Technique (By Breaking It…)

Okay so clearly this is counter-intuitive. Often we when think of getting better with our singing. We think of it as layering good technique like brickwork? One step at a time.

But today, I mean what I say when we are going to break things.

If you want your singing to be more free, have more control, power, high notes. Whatever you want to do.

One important strategy here is going to be BREAK YOUR VOCAL technique.

Real quick! For those of you who don’t know me. My name is Ivan, I love making music and also teaching singing to students all around the world. On this newsletter my goal is to make learning to sing simple. If that’s up your lane, consider subscribing. If you want to improve your voice faster, check out the links down below for ways to work with me

If you want to inspire our next episode! Drop in the comments below what you want me to talk about next.

Alright! Let’s dive in.

The goal often for us as singers is we want it all.

  1. We want it to feel effortless

  2. We want more control

  3. We want those high notes. Don’t we?

But how exactly does this happen?

Very simply from my experience this is done through USING the right muscles and simultaneously STRIPPING AWAY the wrong muscles.

I’ve talked a lot about engaging the right muscles. Learning what it does to do this as well. For example, learning to engage/feel the muscles that STRETCH the vocal folds. And I’ve talked about this in detail in previous episodes. If you’re unfamiliar, make sure to watch them first.

Now I talked a lot about breaking your vocal technique.

What do I mean by this?

A big part of training also though is learning BREAK dependencies you’ve built in your vocal technique

You see…

Often when we’re trying to engage the right muscles. Stretch the vocal folds and change pitch.

We will also engage other muscles. Ones that are unnecessary for the movement.

Examples:

1) Head raising

2) Mouth movements

3) Eye movements

4) Changes in volume

Sure they might be important for certain extremes of our range. E.g. for our really high notes, our mouth need to open acoustically.

But for a lot of our range especially in the middle. These movements are unnecessary. But we tend to do them as a CRUTCH.

Sometimes we’ve even normalised it to the point where it’s like that's how it feels like to hit the notes.

But I want YOU to challenge that today.

Here’s a little exercise.

I want you to run through your songs/exercises.

And just noticed any habits that you might have THAT have got nothing to do with stretching or closing the cords.

For example.

Are you moving your head a specific way?

Are you doing a specific thing with your tongue?

Are you pressing a specific muscle?

From there, CHALLENGE yourself.

Can I do it without this happening. Because if you really understand your vocal technique, a lot of these movements will be unnecessary.

Anyway that’s a wrap team! Hope you’ve found value out of this episode. If you did, please share this with a friend or on your social media. It really helps this channel grow and would mean the world to me.

Also if you’re looking for some tailored/specific help. I’ve got ways to study with me down in the description. Apart from that, my name is Ivan - I’m your voice teacher and I’ll see you next Thursday/Friday for our weekly episodes.

Take care!
